Q：In Encoding/Decoding, hall says,”In that moment the formal sub-rules of discourse are 'in dominance', without, of course, subordinating out of existence the historical event so signified, the social relations in which the rules are set to work or the social and political consequences of the event having been signified in this way.” How can we put this viewpoint in discussion with Pierre Bourdieu’s distinction theory? Q: does the dominant-hegemonic position directly related to the “equivalence” that Hall mentioned earlier in the piece, which means a message can be decoded exactly as the way it originally intended?

Adare, Week 3 Discussion

I got stuck on the Althusser, so both of my questions are on that reading. I was interested in Althusser's second thesis: "Ideology has a material existence." From what I understand the materiality of ideology is manifested in the actions that legitimate the beliefs for individuals. I was wondering if there was any connection between this materiality and the materiality described in "A Thief in the Night"? In that chapter Brunsdon says, "Stuart reminds us of the materiality of political and theoretical disagreements. Real people with passionate investments," when referring to Hall's memory of feminist thought coming into cultural studies. Brunsdon seems to suggest that the materiality in this case is linked to emotions and how people felt at that time. Slack notes “an important political aspect of cultural studies: the recognition that the work of cultural studies involves at a variety of levels a politics within a—broadly understood—marxist framework. With and through articulation, we engage the concrete in order to change it, that is, to rearticulate it” (115). However, she concludes the piece by stating that she is “particularly concerned that as cultural studies becomes… a more institutionally acceptable academic practice”, articulation will lose its political and strategic elements (127).
