In Grossberg's chapter titled "Articulation and Culture," the linguistic concepts of Structuralism and Post-Structuralism are two key components in his argument of the role of the critic in cultural studies. In order to understand the nuances between the two, what is a possible example of a signage, and how Structuralism/Post-Structuralism interprets this signage, that we as a class can talk through to articulate the differences between the two concepts?
In addressing Grossberg's stance on the critic, it makes me wonder how certain disciplines are impacted. When referring to English as a discipline, how does this impact literary critics? How does this impact how we teach our students, since interpretation of a text (as well as backing up interpretations with textual evidence) is an intrinsic part of the discipline? How does this possibly problematize teaching literary interpretation in the classroom?
