My first question is a clarifying question from the Giroux reading. I'm still uncertain about the ways politics, pedagogy, culture, and agency are related. Mainly, I want to know more about the way that Giroux is using pedagogy. This quote: It is precisely this legacy of both politicizing culture and insisting on the pedagogical nature of the political that makes Hall's work so important at the present time. If agency is negotiated, made and remade within the symbolic and material relations of power and enacted within diverse and changing historical and relational contexts, agency cannot be abstracted from the self-reflexive possibilities of pedagogy, nor can it be removed from the dynamics of cultural politics." presents some form of relation between these concepts, however my question has to do with how pedagogy manifests in the public sphere as a factor in determinations of social, cultural, and political identities.
I am also interested in the ways that Kiang discussed the inclusion of personal narratives/perspectives in the classroom as his methods place specific emphasis on form. One of the examples he includes is a collective poem done by a class, and in relation to Hall's discussions of diaspora and his efforts to initiate new ideological/methodological ideals during his time at Oxford, how can we balance efforts for students to express themselves authentically in the classroom while at the same time providing enough instruction for institutional standards?
