What is the relationship between postmodernism and conjuncture? Also, what is the role of love in and personal connection in scholarship? In the interview, "On Postmodernism and Articulation" Hall is asked about his opinion on postmodernism. What I took from his (very long) answer is that he isn't really convinced of postmodernist theory although there are some parts--about departing from modernist thought that he does agree with. What I feel like is at the heart of Hall's answer is that just because things in the world are changing and no longer fit perfectly with a theoretical framework doesn't mean that folks should move on so quickly to define a new era or move us into a new period. I feel like love, compassion, and human connection/experience have come up across a few readings and I always enjoy when scholarly texts engage with these themes!
I liked Grossberg's section on pop culture audience and I am now thinking about how audience in this context is the same or different from audience reception. Grossberg's explanation of how to identify audiences suggests that the identification happens before the media is viewed. Reception is concerned with how media effects the audience, so this happens after the media is consumed. Can these two "audiences" be in conversation with each other or am I reaching?
No emoji collage, I am tired :(
